As you might have heard or read, grapes have a lot of health benefits for the human body and anti-aging effect is one of them.

Resveratrol also promotes apoptosis, which is the natural dying of old and damaged cells so that they can be replaced with new fresh ones, allowing rejuvenation at cellular level. So, old and damaged cells are replaced quicker by fresh new ones – seeing the connection here in terms of anti-aging effect!

Resveratrol has an anti-aging effect because it reduces wrinkles and fine lines that appear around the eyes and mouth. It stretches the skin and makes it suppler.

In addition to its anti-aging effects, resveratrol is also known for fighting cancer cells, antiviral effect and improving cardiovascular system.

Resveratrol can be found in high quantities in grape seeds and grape skin (about 5 – 10 milligrams of resveratrol per 100 g of grape skin).

The market is now filled with resveratrol supplements. Before going to your local pharmacy to buy this product, maybe it is best to head to your market place to buy some grapes. Bear in mind that instead of taking a processed supplement with a single nutrient, you should better take it along with other antioxidants, vitamins, polyphenols directly from a natural source. All these nutrients work better together for a greater effect and more health benefits.

However, if you hate eating grapes with seeds (you really have to chew the seeds because they are not easily digested in the stomach), you could try in the form of oil, powder, capsules etc. When going for this solution, always check the ingredients so that the product is as natural as possible.

    I am a big supporter of the positive effects that resveratrol can have on the body. The problem with resveratrol supplementation however is that it loses its potency when coming in contact with air; called oxidative degradation AND it is not easily absorbed in the system; called low bioavailability.

    Many of the resveratrol supplements on the market today state that they have high milligrams per pill but in actuality, most of the potency is lost during the manufacturing process and then in the bottle while waiting to be consumed, so they actually contain very little resveratrol.

    And then what comes into play is the fact that the resveratrol crystal contained in most supplements is too large to be absorbed in the body so even if you were getting potent resveratrol, your body wouldn’t be able to break it down and absorb it efficiently.

    Nice one. With so many superfoods out there (which I do love) its nice to be humbled by how great a good ol’ grape can be. An amazing thing I heard recently about them is that they are one of the only foods that can cover all the bases of nutrients that humans need to survive, meaning we can live of grapes alone. I think this has a lot to do with the fact that in the summer, we can eat them as is and they are a cooling food, but we can then dry them and create raisins which then give them a warming influence on the body.

    No wonder grapes are one of the sacred foods of our past.
